What kind of camera?
Thu, 03/11/2010 - 13:49
I’m spending three months in Europe, I thought about getting a DSLR but don’t want the added bulk.
I want something compact that does not scarifice high picture quality, wide angle lens, and HD movie recording capabilities.
Here’s my current choice: http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/shop/Cameras-Camcorders/Digital-Cameras/2010-LUMIX-Digital-Cameras/model.DMC-ZS7K_11002_7000000000000005702
Anyone have experience with this line… suggestions?
I am leaving from SFO with $8000 for 98 days

Hey imatrojan, that link doesn’t work. Make sure you posted the entire link.
Is photography an actual hobby of yours? Have you ever used an SLR and/or have you always wanted to buy a DSLR, and are serious about making this a hobby?

luv_the_beach the link actually worked fine for me. You just have to cut/paste it to get it to work.
This does look like a pretty cool camera. It appears to have all the features you are looking for in a nice compact camera. The fact that this camera also has built in GPS certainly is an added bonus.

Hey luvthebeach – photography is not a hobby but I’m doing a lot of traveling this summer and want the ability to take really good pictures. Plus I think I would really enjoy a nicer camera. I’ve decided an slr will just take too much room, won’t be practical to take out partying at night, and is not worth the extra money.
Here are the three cameras I’m looking at, having trouble differentiating between the two sony’s besides price. Let me know what you guys think…
1) Panasonic DMC-ZS7
2) Sony Cybershot H55
3) Sony Cybershot HX5V/B

After doing some research I’ve narrowed it down to the DMC-ZS7 and the Sony HX5V. Both have GPS and wide angle. Panasonic boasts better megapixels (12.0 vs. 10.2) but only records movies in 780p (vs. 1080i on the Sony)… I’m thinking of making a video blog so the 1080i is appealing. The Sony will also end up about $70 cheaper, performs better in low-light conditions and has overall easier functionality. I’m leaning towards the Sony but will test both out before making a decision.
For the camera aficionados, will the 2 extra mps on the Panasonic make a big difference? What about 1080i vs. 780p for video? Thanks.

Personally, I am getting the Sony HX5V… with the small sensors on both cameras, the extra two MP wouldn’t really make much differences… in fact, I have read reviews that mentioned that the two camera capture basically the same amount of details… The price and the extra features in the Sony is what clinched it for me… Now I just need find a good price so I can order it…

Good to hear you’ve read the same things. I’ve seen the sony for as low as 329 online. I’m going to try to wait a find a best buy coupon and then check the two cameras out in person… let me know if you find the HX5V for cheaper!

I want to get it, but the problem is most sites online are all sold out… so hoping they will restock soon…

Get a Canon G11.
Best small alternative to an DSLR. Bulky in size compared to the compact cameras you are used to seeing, but nothing as big as any standard DSLR.
If you are one to use any lenses or external flash, this one has the capability to do so. It also takes great low light shots.
Basically this is your alternative to if you cannot take a DSLR, but does not replace quality.

I’ve decided to go with the Canon Powershot s90 – pocketable camera (which is huge. I can’t take the G11 out to the bars and clubs), total flexibility, good quality video but no hd, and it takes stunning pictures. This review (watch the youtube videos) converted me and is definitely worth reading if you’re in the market for a pocket digi-camera.
