I am planning to go on a 3 month european train trip and will be staying with friends and family and hostels in over 15 countries. I am definitly getting a backpack but I just need some really specific advice on what would be a good size and company and maybe even model. I don’t want to spend more than 200 dollars and would prefer to spend a lot less than that. I do want quality though, something i can trust, and possibly one with a detachable day pack.

Buy the same pack that you would buy for a 2-week trip. As far as size, 50-60 L is about right. As far as brands, that depends on price. Your price of $200 will get you a decent pack. Do a search on this board for more details. I swear somebody asked this exact question within the past month.

i have a 70 L pack from MEC.

check them out at www.mec.ca

Spent 2 weeks in England and France with it. You shouldn’t need to spend anymore than than 200 bucks for any pack for vacation unless you are doing extreme stuff in africa or antarctica. Happy Travels.

For a 25-50 over 200 eagle creek makes awesome ones. It has way more features then any of the other ones I saw..and when I wore it(with weight inside), the thing felt 10 times better then any of the Kelty’s I tried on. It comes with the daypack and theres a latch so you can wear the daypack on the front as well as back. It also has a rain covering connected to it so you can either cover the back half of your bag as you wear it, or you can convert the entire backpack into a duffle bag.

hey fellow Canuck,

depending on where you are staying (hostel or hotel)

for hostels, if you have a lot of stuff and your pack won’t fit into a locker, i would choose one of the 2 zippered packs from MEC, the Sojourn or the Traveller (about 60 L) these are like suitcases that you wear on your back. these are 137/150 bucks a pop. the thing about the zippers is that you can lock zippers shut – something you can’t do with the packs with drawstrings. I bought the cheaper model and it was fine. it was however too big to fit into the locker in my London hostel so i chained it to my bunk

i would have preferred to have bought the slightly more comfortable packs that are used for camping but they aren’t zippered and security was a concern of mine. If you are staying in hotels or single rooms i would go with these since they are cheaper and more comfortable. the brio 60/70s are nice
