i have heard that it is shabby, trashy, is that true? If so what surrounding cities are hip, artistic, fashionable, and scenic?

It’s more shabby than you think and most likely more trashy than you could imagine. Still, you’d hardly find a city as artistic and scenic as Naples is anywhere in Italy

Naples is crap. There is nothing to do there, and the whole place is a pile of shite. Oh, and the place stinks. Pompeii on the ohter hand is rather nice, a few good bars in pompeii as well.

Yeah, naples is super sketchy. I often say junkies shooting up in the morning right under my balcony, and after the sun goes down i wouldn’t walk alone. But if you take the time to discover the city, there are some cool things there. Little pizza places and cafes and such… although the quaintness is kinda subdued by the overall trashiness of the city. Makes a good base to explore pompeii and capri though.

I kind of dug it. It was seedy but people there kept it real. Great food too. I never felt scared. It was kind of crazy though…little kids on motorcycles…firecrackers in the streets..pitbulls aimlessly roaming around. The area around the station has almost no redeeming qualities..but when you move away from there you’ll see some of the good old Naploli charm.

I’ll be traveling alone in Italy for two weeks. I wanted to go to Naples, but I haven’t seen or heard any rave reviews. Am I better off just not visiting, especially if I’m alone?

Go see it. If you’re tentative about it, just stay in Sorrento or one of Naples friendlier neighboring cities..then you can see it for a day but leave in the evening for somewhere more chilled.

Just use your common sence avoiding suspiciou-looking places in the evening and you’ll enjoy Naples for sure.

Any women who have visited Naples on their own? How’s the traffic and crossing the street?

The Nat’l Archeological Museum in Naples has some absolute treasures inside—go reread your art history books before you go—you’ll see lots of originals in Naples.

Yes, it’s a little sketchy, but convenient for trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Capri.

There aren’t problems with street crossing as there are always traffic jams Smile

I passed through Naples on my way to Carpi last year. I would definately recommend going to Capri. Its blue water on white walls. Its gorgeous there and the people are really nice. We only took a day trip last year, but this year we are staying three days in hotel Weber which is right on the water. Capri was definately one of my high-lights last year. Its about 20 minutes by ferry boat from Naples.

I am female, was in Naples by myself (aug) and then a friend met me(male), we moved on to Sorrento, Capri Positano. It is a port city and I do describe it as the ARMPIT of Italy lol, nevertheless it was cool for a day. I’ve never seen anything like it./ We found amazing food and If you are open minded you will appreciate it for a day(max). Try to go with a guy, or you will be live bate, esp around the train station! good luck.

Ciao,

First thing you do when you get to the train station…get a good map of naples. If you have one before you get there, you are even better off! Next, walk straight out of the station…don’t stop, don’t pay attention to all the people who want money from you, just walk right out like you are late for a train. Then, look for the bar MEXICA and go have a cafe. They are elready sweetend, only in Napoli it is like that! Then, make your way down and away from the station. Then some pizza. Look for a good place at www.egullet.org

Then have fun, stay safe and dont worry, but dont be dumb either!

MANYAK

Napoli…

Green Light = GO
Yellow Light = Go
Red Light = GO
(watch yourself!)

I forgot to mention this anecdote in my earlier message. When I got to Naples, I had to take a piss real bad. I go to the bathroom at the station and as I’m walking past the stalls…I pass by one with the door wide open..and see this fat/dirty looking guy taking a dump and smiling at me as I walk by. I’m a dude. As I take my piss, I hear the guy blasting away and laughing at the same time. The toilet I was pissing in was filled with shit and a newspaper. It was perhaps the filthiest bathroom I’ve ever seen..and w/ a sick vibe given that weirdo. I’ve visited places in the middle of nowhere in Asia where there was a hole in the ground..and those places looked like a Harrods washroom compared to this place.
