I don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb on my trip to London, Paris, Amsterdam this summer. Are there certain articles of clothing that are acceptable here in America, that are despised in Europe?

I’ve heard cowboy hats, tennis shoes, shorts, and jeans are not too popular. Any suggestions?

bright white athletic shoes will stick out
stylish well-fitting jeans are fine

styles vary by country and within countries by region or city. Wear what you are comfortable with, but you probably won’t be comfortable if dressed like a poor white trash slob. (I know that sounds snobby but maybe the idea translates?)

Tennis shoes aren’t OK? I understand about the bright white sneakers — ew anyway — but I’ve always worn my Chuck Taylors while out in London and Dublin and not felt too glaringly American. Admittedly those are the only major cities in Europe I’ve been to, as I think the case would not be the same if I went to, say, Milan.

Tennis shoes are fine everywhere. I’ve worn them in every place in Europe i’ve been and never had problems.

I did notice that most people in Paris, London and Scotland did not wear New Balance (mine) or Chuck Taylors (my son’s) but seriously whatever makes you feel comfortable is most important. I was actually surprised that everywhere in terms of clothing, people looked basically the same.

Tennis shows (aka sneakers), and jeans are widely worn in Europe. You just have to know when and where they’re appropriate, but if you’re under 35, then they’re appropriate for a wide array of occasions, including going out at night. Keep in mind that at least in Southern Europe people tend to wear trendy-looking jeans. So, those plain tapered jeans, or over-sized FUBU’s will make you stand out.

Dont bring a baseball cap. You wouldnt even think a thing about it in USA, but there just arent any in Europe.

Avoid sun visor caps, neckerchiefs, checked shirts, tailored shorts, fanny bags, socks with sandals. Otherwise anything goes !

But in all seriousness, just relax. Wear what you feel comfortable in. One man’s fashion is another’s faux pas.

Unless, that is, your mission is to attract the ladies? Then you wont pull if you look like a twat.

It is important to feel comfortable so wear what ever makes you happy.
Jeans and trainer (tennis shoes) are widely worn in Europe. In the UK where I live they are almost the uniform of the young. Jeans are more than acceptable to wear on a night out to all but the most upmarket establishments and are definately fine for day wear.

I’ve never seen adult diapers in Europe, so I’d rule that one out.

i say there are only a few rules…

shower daily ..smell great…and be nice to the locals…dont criticise anything too loudly …ull be surprised who can speak english.. compliment the host country …dont compare ur culture with theirs…represent ur country well ..u never know who will judge ur behaviour and label ur whole nation as boorish or worse boring!

Very well said Sparks.

I wear a cowboy hat pretty much daily and I am not wearing the hat over there just because people warned be against it. Which is okay by me. I am just going to wear something comfortable but nice.

u know…im packing for this croatian trip ..just thinking about what to take to minimise it all
so im there with my favourite tee shirts and my jeans

and every one of them was an american one…gorgeous fabric…great colours for photos…nice fitting…easy wash …
and i feel i cant pack them

i plan to go to some muslim -ish cities too in bosnia and montenegro…i dont want to draw attention \

and it saddens me
it maddens me
cos i love my yosemite tee
i love my carmel california red top
and my little palm springs baby blue is soooo cute

theyre all staying at home
because
maybe
someone wont like em
even tho the print on them is so tiny i wont take the risk

these tees remind me of the great natural sights i saw…the state national park up there in palm springs…the great rock formations in yosemite…the beautiful beaches of california
all these will be still here no matter whether its radical muslims or anyone else who dominates the joint

mother earth cares less and so do i ..i just want to be safe…but i want my fav t-shirts with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
