What was your Favorite Hostel
Tue, 06/10/2008 - 10:06
I know it asks for your favorite but if you have more than one favorite, list away…
Hostel Name – City – Country
maybe what you liked about it…
I am leaving from Montreal, Canada with $1600 for 16 days
Frankfurt, Munich, Venice, Florence, Nice, Barcelona, Paris

My favourite was Hostel Metropol in Madrid. The atmosphre was great. It was right in the centre and it was clean. The only downside was the lines of prostitutes on one of the adjoining streets, but they never bothered you and added a bit of “character” to the place.
My favourite:
Caulaincourt Square Hostel – Paris – FRANCE
There are tons of Paris hostels but this one was great as it was not only really nice, clean and friendly but also situated in the north of Montmartre away from all the tourism.
It really felt like a little bit of French culture rather than just another cheap place to stay in the city.
Funny, when I think back, I can only remember the really bad ones haha!
All the good ones, I mostly just remember the folk I met or how cool the town itself was…
Bath, Haltwhistle, London, Füssen, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Speyer, Nördlingen, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Rome, Ostia Antica, Athens, Delphi, Athens
Coming to think of it now i cant remember the names of most of the hostels i stayed in but the majority were very good.
My fav has to be one in Sofia, Was just off the main square. Not a particularly attractive hostel but the staff were brilliant and very relaxed which made the place. Just need to remember the name of it now?
Athens, Páros, Náxos, Mýkonos, Náxos, Íos, Thíra

Hostel Mostel?
Yeah that one was pretty nice, such a good value, free food and all kinds of other stuff for only like 10 euro. I like Hiker’s Hostel in Veliko Turnovo a little better though, mostly because of location. It was like a little secluded place that you have walk up a tiny road past lots of shanty houses and villagers, and tons of stray cats. And an amazing view.
Sir Toby’s, Prague. Copied & pasted from one of several of my glowing reviews here:
I’ve not stayed in loads of hostels—only in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and Czech Republic. But hands-down the absolute best is, by far, Sir Toby’s in Prague.
Excellent excellent excellent, and I don’t use that superlative often. Clean, everything in good working condition, cool rooms and nice WC/shower rooms, great kitchen, cool cellar and patio, facility had “character” yet with modern conveniences, and a great intangible “vibe.” But the absolute best were the staff—5 star hotels should put their staff through Sir Toby’s training. Very helpful, genuine, down-to-earth, it was always great to interact with them—whether getting restaurant recco’s, tram tickets, dropping off luggage, or buying internet time, whatever—excellent.
No that was not it, after a bit of looking it was Nightingale Hostel. As i said not the most atractive hostel i have stayed in but the best staff and a good feel about the place.
Athens, Páros, Náxos, Mýkonos, Náxos, Íos, Thíra

Fabrik (Berlin)
This is not a party hostel. But it is in a fun bohemian neighborhood.
Fabrik was quiet and comfy, with friendly staff and a nice cafe. It was kinda fun during World Cup.
Many Hostels Have Private Rooms: Sure, they’re not the Ritz but they’re usually clean and have a bathroom in the room or nearby. Plus, they’re generally a fraction of what a similar hotel room in the same area would cost AND often include breakfast. Add in the bonus of internet access/lounge/activity planning that many hostels have and there’s not much reason to dimiss a hostel.
Best Romantic Inns and Hotels
I found a great article about summer residences in Denmark – really intersting i would have never considered denmark for summer holliday but now i will probably do that!

The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. ~St. Augustine
my favourite place is HostelCentar in Belgrade, Serbia.
I have stayed there a couple of times, and it is by far the coolest place i have ever been to…
nice and professional staff, free TV and PC with free internet access in each, free phone in case you need it, amazingly clean and tidy, nice pastry served for breakfast… absolutely fantastic!
If you ever get to chance to go there… DO SO!!!!
I stayed there too! Loved it…and then spent 3 nights at “Friend’s Hostel”, along Prostitution Avenue. Never again…
Favorite ever was Backpack Guesthouse in Budapest. You WILL stay longer than you anticipated, I swear it to you. Most relaxed, coolest environment, and you’ll meet really awesome people. Oh…and did I mention free hookah, free DVD’s, and (equivalent) 50 cent beer? Mhmm.
Reykjavik, Paris
I have stayed there a couple of times, and it is by far the coolest place i have ever been to…
nice and professional staff, free TV and PC with free internet access in each, free phone in case you need it, amazingly clean and tidy, nice pastry served for breakfast… absolutely fantastic!

They let me store my pack for the day for free
Reykjavik, Paris
A few other favs…
Snuffel – Brugge
Best staff in Europe, extremely good atmosphere. Brugge is filled with good hostels, but this one just plain wins.
Baxpax Mitte – Berlin
Crash in the K studio (30+ beds) on your first night and meet cool people to hang/travel with for the next week, guaranteed. Rooftop bar owns.
Celica – Ljubljana
Best breakfast in Europe (I’m talkin fresh fruit here, people), very friendly staff, cheap beds; located a 10 minute walk from city center, and smack-dab in the middle of a mind-blowingly cool artists/squatters colony. Don’t miss.
Silver Central – Split
Brand new counterpart to Silver Gate. It hadn’t officially opened yet when I got there, and as such it was priced the same as Silver Gate. Now, apparently, it’s pretty pricey? Small, cozy, pristine bathrooms, and PERFECT location. The “Silver” staff are all amazing.
Adriatic Guesthouse – Dubrovnik
Some dude’s home/hostel/hotel. Most helpful owner I’ve ever met. A busride from the old town, 5 minute walk from Lapad beaches, and he has a pool with a VIEW. Hugely recommended.
Old Prague Hostel – Prague
I know there’s a laundry-list of great Prague hostels, but I have to give this one props. There was a definite community atmosphere (big potluck-style dinners just about every night), and the location is truly the best. Spitting distance to Bohemia Bagel, with pancakes to die for.
Reykjavik, Paris
Other poster was right, i can name alot of shitty hostels that i’d never stay in again. My fav is Funny Farm- Interlaken Cool staff, atmosphere and Spliff
Madrid, Barcelona, Zürich, Munich, Vienna, Prague, Berlin
heaps of crappy ones..
it all comes down to the people at the end of the day.
“friends” hostel in paris was pretty neat.
at night, people walk up to the Sacre Cuer where there’s an amazing view of the Eiffel Tower when it’s lit up.
Prague Square Hostel, Prague, Czech republic, Old Town. The best location in Prague, maybe 50 steps from Old Town Square, very social and clean. Nice common rooms with tv and lot of movies.
The Kabul hostel, Barcelona, Spain. Amazing hostel, amazing location. Real party hostel. Met lot of nice people there. Barcelona is great!
My favorite and absolutelly best hostel I can recommend is Hostel ELF in Prague..
www.hostelelf.com could help you to check that place. It has a very funky feel — great for if you want to meet other travelers and hang out and I remember that they made for us free dinner !….when you are in Czech republic, dont miss Hostel 99 in Cesky Krumlov but dont remember the web sites..
- HI hostel, Bouillon, Belgium
Very friendly, great view (quite a hike up though)
- Jurai’s place, Bratislava
Very friendly owner, very homely feel, good price, walking distance from the centre, close to the train station, good place to meet people
- Nathan’s Villa Hostel, Warsaw
Not cheap for Polish standards, but the price includes breakfast, laundry and internet. Kind of a party hostel, so not the place for you if you’re looking for peace and quiet. Good location.
Ars Hostel – Krakow.
Good, clean showers and toilets. Pretty comfy beds (maybe a bit creaky). Breakfast in the morning, vodka shots and pub crawls at night. Really great place to stay. Cheap as well.
On the south side of the city but well within reach of all the main attractions.
Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Warsaw, Kraków
Bucharest, Braşov, Sighişoara, Sibiu, Curtea de Argeş, Bucharest
I liked Funny Farm a lot. My room had a balcony! with a view of the Jungfrau to die for. It’s way nicer and quieter than Balmers, and yet right across the street so you can still head over to party.
Reykjavik, Paris
Loch Ness Backpacker’s Lodge, Drumnadrochit, Scotland….2 mins from Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle ….sigh! but another fave was one on the isle of colonsay, one of the hebrides was amazing but well out of the way. but all in all any I’ve stayed in Scotland or anywhere in Europe for that matter. Cowgate in Edinburgh is great too. Very hotel like and a great central location.
NOT STAYED IN ANY YET BUT LOOKING FOR ONE IN PARIS WHICH IS CHILD FREINDLY
THE ONE WHERE I LIVE IN GLAGOW IS REALLY GOOD THOUGH MY GERMAN SISTER IN LAW STAYED THERE WITH MY NOW GERMAN BROTHER WHEN OVER ON HOLIDAY NICE CHEAP CHEERFUL IN THE HEART OF THE CITY NEAR THE FAMOUS RIVER CLYDE PLENTY OF SHOPPING CAFE OPPERTUNITYS NIGHT CLUBS NEAR BY CASINOS AND RIVER WALKS
BE AWARE THAT PUB MEALS ARE CHEAPER THAN MC DONALDS AND BETTER VALUE FULLS YOU UP MORE:
Paris, Paris
r kennedy
ooh you take me back, i lived very close to the Clyde when I lived in Glasgow for 15 months last year such a great city, so full of life. and you’re right about those pub meals!
as for paris – when I was there we stayed in a hotel that was cheaper than most hostels we looked at: Hotel du Roi Rene. not very central but close to a subway system that gets you into the city fast enough. Worth it to check it out for ya I’d say.
Here are my all time favourites:
Nathan’s Villa – Sighisoara, Romania
Nathan’s Villa – Krakow, Poland
Sir Toby’s – Prague, Czech Republic
Kosmonaut – Lviv, Ukraine
Hostel 99, Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic
All of these hostels I have been to at least three times. I’ve gotta admit they are amongst the best I’ve ever stayed in for meeting other travellers and socializing.
Backpackerscorner.com My little space on the net for travel articles and advice.
Burg Hostel – Sighisoara, Romania
Hostel af Chapman, Stockholm, Sweden, http://svenskaturist… – never slept in it, just saw it many times from outside, but the idea of a hostel on an old boat, in the middle of Stockholm, sounds very appealing.
Carpathian Mountains and Danube Delta
Oh, I forgot to mention Villa Camerata, Florence, Italy.
we camped there, so I don’t know much details about the rooms, but the atmosphere was great (this was in April 2007, things might have changed in between) and the drinks were cheap

Carpathian Mountains and Danube Delta
My favorite hostel is Kabul Youth Hostel. It is the Europe’s most famous hostel in Barcelona. It provides a great facility. it is open 24 hrs. a day. it is the best place to relax in air conditioned comfort and catch up on those never-ending emails (for free!). And by night it converts into the famous bar – a great place to relax, reflect on your day, and plan the night ahead over a drink or 2, whilst getting to know other guests from all over the world.
“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” (Keep traveling).
There are many more good hostels around the world. Once i visited to The Pink Palace hostel. It is situated at Corfu Island in Greece. It its famous for its beach location and parties. The parties out there are really awesome. The activities are also amazing. Its not even very expensive compare to the facilities provide by them.

Hostels in Panama City
Mamallena Backpackers
Mamallena backpackers hostel is not only a place for low budget travellers but also the place to find lots of informatons.
all of u have provided very useful information, thanks for share
I’ve been in Sydney Central Hostel and I think it’s one of the best hostel that I’ve stayed. All fully furnished and have TV and fridge. Truly convenient and comfortable.
stayed there 3 years ago when i flew up for the come together fesival. sweet joint. only downside was there wasnt much of a party atmosphere as most people kept to themselves. but i was fine, we ended up having friends crashing

Totters in Wales in the city of Caernarfon.
Totters
Nice quiet hostel. About a block off of the main run. I stopped there years ago while touring with stratravel.com
Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, and end up getting charged double.
Just thought of it today—Ashlee House in London (apparently called “Clink 261” now?). It wasn’t even that impressive a Hostel, but there was a decent community vibe, and I was able to get a room last-second on a Saturday night as a walk-in. It really came through in a clutch, so I have to give them props.
Reykjavik, Paris
I’ve been trying to think if there have been any hostels (through a combo of factors) over the last few years that have really blown me away… but I’m not sure that there are, because none of the names are coming to me. Pretty much all of them have some little thing that kinda bothers me, either at the time or in retrospect

Youth Hostel Menaggio La Primula (Lake Como, Italy)
Magical stay at Hostel in Menaggio at Lake Como, Italy. It had a very laid-back luxury feel for a hostel. When I checked in I had a beer on the patio and enjoyed the lake view and weather. They served an amazing dinner for a very reasonable price, during which time I was able to make friends with other travelers, and since I was traveling solo this was awesome. The staff was incredibly helpful, someone hooked me up with a private horse back riding trail ride and to this day I’m amazed that worked out without any cell phones- I took a little bus to a remote stop and met a guy in the middle of nowhere who took me horseback riding in the mountainous country hillside. I will never forget that horseback ride in my life! It was a slice of heaven that place.

One of my favorite hostel is Little Town Budget Hostel in Prague. I stayed for 2 nights. It is clean, 24 hours receptions and very friendly. Elevator is available. Clean bathroom with bathtube. I shared the bathroom with the other one room, which was empty . So, having a private, clean bathroom, with 24 hours hot shower, feels like in stars hotel . The hostel is close to the tram stop, and just few minutes walk to the prague castle and the charles bridge and the old town. Nice view to the top of the castle from the window, especially at night.
cheers,
AntonMy favorite hostel is BVJ Quartier Latin in Paris. It was so well located that we walk for most of our trip. Plus, I hate having to take the bus or metro while traveling. You miss so much when you do that all the time. The Quartier Latin (wich is the student area) has a really good ambience.
They served us fresh french bread and goooooddd hot chocolat every morning. I took a big piece with me everyday to make a sandwish and the never told me not to. I think they didn’t mind. So much bread was wasted anyway …
Backpacker’s Guesthouse in Budapest, Hungary is simply amazing. You leave missing a newly acquired family, or at least feeling like you have. It may sound cheesy and naive but it’s true. And yes, you may lose touch, but you continue to miss them because you continue to miss the place. One of the only hostels I know I’ll go back to, the other being Oasis in Granada, Spain.
Paris
Berlin, Prague, Bratislava, Palárikovo, Budapest, Zagreb, Belgrade, Sofia, Bucharest, Kiev, Vilnius, Warsaw
Bucharest, Veliko Tarnovo, Plovdiv, Belgrade, Sarajevo, Kotor, Dubrovnik, Split, Ljubljana, Graz, Budapest, Bratislava, Prague, Berlin
Rising Cock, Lagos, Portugal Every night they have an activity such as beer pong tournaments, trivia nights, and the beach party. Mama’s crepes and lemon tea are a great hang over cure and the chill out room is great for nursing that splitting headache!!
London, Basingstoke, Southampton, Shrewsbury, Leeds, Haarlem, Amsterdam, Brussels, Prague, Munich, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid, Málaga, Loulé, Dublin, London
I like the hikers hotels in Veliko Turnovo is mainly because the location a little better but. It is like a small quiet place, you’ve gone way past a small number of squatter houses and villagers, and tons of stray cats. And an amazing view.

KABULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL! Kabul in Barcelona is by far one of the best hostels in Europe. Great location, met tons of cool people, partied every night. Book it! you won’t regret it.
London, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Bari, Florence, Munich, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris
I admit, that I was staing in The One Hostel in Wroclaw(Poland).
Hostel is facing town hall. There’s a lot going on at night in the city center
So if any of you will be in Wroclaw you can stay there.
Oki Doki hostel – Warsaw – Poland
Very colorful (amazing design!) comfortable, great place, nice people.

Hey, my favorite hostel is the City Hostel – Berlin – Germany, very well located, clean and cheap.
I have been to madrid for 5 days. I was looking for a budget place so I found El Tera Madrid, it was cheap and nice. The best thing was that lookers and laudry there was absolutely for free. Moreover, we partied all night and came to hostel at like 2 o’clock in the mosring and the doors were still open.
My favourite hostel calls Cityhostel Berlin. Nice Rooms, tasty breakfast, und a great origin to strat a citytour.
