You will do a lot of walking in both cities probably so try and pack as many comfortable clothes as you can but be warned it can be pretty cold this time of year in Paris. Parisians and Romans typically dress very well, if you don’t want to stand out forgot leisure wear and co-ordinate your clothes well with mainly neutral colours. Romans can have a pretty unique sense of style as one of our writers found out http://www.globalgra… but you normally find more outlandlish stuff in the summer not the winter. Hope this helps!
Grasshopper, can you clarfiy what you mean by leisurewear? If you’re talking about sweats, then I agree with you. But if you’re talking about casual clothing (jeans, t-shirts, etc), those will not make pauline stand out in France/Italy.
You can feel free to dress casual (jeans, denim, tshirts are okay). As long as it’s not baggy, sloppy, super plain, mommy jeans, etc, then you will stand out. And, of course, the current American fad of wearing pajamas in public is a no-no in Europe (or at least in Southern). But nice casual (nice jeans, fitted t-shirt, smart gym shoes) is perfectly fine and very common in Rome and Paris, and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
Of course, even if you “dress nice” by your standards, there might be some cultural differences that you didn’t anticipate (women don’t really have to worry about this as much as guys do). Don’t worry too much about fitting in…just make sure that you don’t stand out like a sore thumb. Although you’re planning on visiting in the winter, my advice for anyone else reading this who may be palnning to visit in the warmer months: please don’t wear shorts after sundown. That screams tourist (particularly American).

Sorry to clarify I meant tracksuits etc. but yes no problem at all with casual, smart casual even better.
Do not! I repeat DO NOT wear tracksuits! You will stick out in Paris and in Rome. I was there recently and can’t recall seeing any at all in Paris or Rome.
I was in Rome this time last year, it can be chilly during the night but I would still say except mid 60’s or low seventies.
I was in Paris last year in January and I wore heavy jacket almost the entire time… I would expect similar conditions this time of year.
Smart casual is a must in my opinion. Also scarfs are very popular. And they are warm!
Who the hell wears tracksuits anyways?
