Carry on Nail Files, but Not Corkscrews
In an effort to speed up security checkpoints at airports and alleviate passenger confusion, the new Transportation Security Administration has issued an updated list of what items may and may not be included in carry-on luggage.
Not surprisingly, firearms of any sort and knives of any size are not permitted in the aircraft cabin. In addition, other items that could be used as weapons — including hockey sticks, golf clubs and baseball bats — are prohibited. Walking canes and umbrellas are allowed once they have been inspected to ensure they are not concealing prohibited items. Nail files, tweezers and eyelash curlers are permissible, but corkscrews, metal scissors with pointed tips and screwdrivers are not.
With the exception of guns, disallowed items are not confiscated. Passengers can give the items to people who are not traveling or they can simply leave them at the checkpoint. Items left at checkpoints will not be returned.
——-> Many of the items forbidden in the aircraft cabin are permitted in checked baggage.
A complete list of proscribed items is available on the Transportation Security Administration’s Web site, www.tsa.dot.gov. Individual airlines may have additional restrictions. The list will be periodically reviewed, and any changes will be announced and posted on the Web site.
