what your going alone?!
Thu, 12/02/2010 - 02:15
I find it kind of funny when I tell friends and people who I work with that I’m going to be going to Europe for 3 months. They always ask who I’m going with, and their reaction to me telling them that i am going alone is always the same. “What?! Your going alone? haven’t you seen the movie Taken?” Of course I’ve seen the movie taken, that’s not going to stop me from traveling. They think I’m crazy and that I’m going to be lonely or get kidnapped, a lot of them also ask “who are you going to talk to?” I’m pretty sure there are people in Europe, at least that’s what I’ve been told…
Then I find it funnier when I tell older people and they ask the same thing, and they always think that it’s one of the best things ever and tell me I’ll meet so many people in the hostels. Now, I know the old people are right but why do so many young people (around my age) think that it is such a bad thing that i am going alone? People are not adventurous or/and they don’t know what they are missing out on. oh well their loss
I am leaving from pa with $8000 for 98 days

Insecurity.
I guess “insecurity” (as opposed to actual fear) works as an answer. I think a lot of young people just can’t stand that thought of being “alone.” Having had phone, cell-phone, internet and face-to-face contact 24/7 for your whole life tends to make you think you have to have someone else “around” to enjoy yourself. My niece was appalled that I’d go to Europe by myself — until she, at age 31, went to her first movie solo. She not only lived through 2 1/2 hours without contact from another friend or family member, she actually enjoyed it and it changed her outlook on other solo adventures.
I think older folks overestimate the danger involved, but maybe are less afraid of not having friends and family around all the time.
Oh well, I know I will have a great time meeting people and seeing the places I want to see. My friends will only be jealous when I get back only to tell them that I had a great time
ooh another thing, Can it be May yet? I really can not wait!

Because most younger people think the main reason to go is for partying, and most people prefer to party with their friends.
I’ve gone both solo and with friends, and both were very fun. The ability you share the sights and experiences with your good friends, and having someone to decrease the boredom (train rides, restaurants, partying, etc) is very nice. However, you will soak up a lot more sights and culture, and meet more new and interesting people if you go solo.
Been getting that a lot lately too! Planning to go on a Eurotrip next summer as well, hopefully from May to June. Will probably be going on my own, and I’ve been getting lots of comments like “You’re going alone? Are you sure? Is it safe?” when I tell people!
Have yet to start planning though. Have you booked everything already?
I have not booked anything yet. I will most likely buy the plane ticket within the next month, just waiting on a better deal then whats out there now.

they can’t be surprised. a lot of people travels alone
Well I totally agree. I like the fact that I sometimes spend three months or maybe even more time in a foreign country for my company. I simply get the opportunity to meet new people, to become acquainted with my environment all by myself and that kind of not only satisfies me but also gives me strength and self-esteem, because I know that you have so many opportunities and you are actually kind of gifted for being able to all this.
we are young…heartache to heartache
we are strong…no one can tell us we are wrong
