When to purchase flights?
Wed, 01/10/2007 - 13:23
I will be backpacking around western Europe in May, and was planning on taking at least two flights (Munich to somewhere in Italy, then from wherever I end up in Italy to Spain). I was wondering if it is going to be expensive and unrealistic to book these flights as little as a few days in advance. Thanks.

I guess your speaking of budget courriers. You most likely can book that soon, but it won’t be a budget price. Usually about 3 weeks before the flight their prices start to steadily go up.
Yes, I was thinking of budget carriers. So if I try to book the flights soon, they will be highly priced? Are you suggesting that I wait until about 3 weeks or more before I plan on flying to book them?
Maybe this year is crazy, but Euro low-cost carrier flight prices are already starting to increase 8 or 9 months in advance. If you know your itinerary, I’d say to book it now. I do have to point out that it’s possible the carrier might have a sale, but look at what you are likely to save versus lose. For example, if you see a fare for 5 Euros plus tax right now, you will save very little if there’s a sale in a few months for 1 Euro plus tax, but you’ll lose a lot if it goes up to 100 Euros plus tax.
But you do have to be very sure of your itinerary, because changing it will be quite costly.
yeah, then again I’ve never taken flights in the summer high season. In any other season, if you book at least 3 weeks in advance, the price should be well below 100 euro. But you should probably use some other advice than mine on this one.
I’ve already booked a budget flight for travel in August. It was only 0.01 Euro (plus taxes), so it was worth booking it early.
the cheapest way to fly, is RyanAir.com, but theres one problem. they dont fly out of munich, So if you could get to another German city i would try. Go to Ryanair and see if you find any good flights
Ryanair is good, but so are a lot of other airlines. Check here:

You can also try bestflights.com.au. They also have plenty of cheap flights.
Are we talking inter-European flights here? I am also looking at flying from somewhere in northern Europe to Rome so I don thave to ride a train.
Whichbudget.com and Skyscanner.net are good for isolating budget flights within Europe.
I know that for us here in Edmonton. We spoke to a travel agency and they suggested for us to purchase our flights to England come February or MArch for a June flight.
Thatx with Air Transat I’m almost certain.
We are looking at 700-800 round trip including taxes if we purchase then.
otherwise after those months were looking at $1000 roundtrip with taxes…so were getting our flights next month YAYYY
