Where to go?
Sun, 10/08/2006 - 03:29
I am in China and planning to go to northern Europe by coming Jan, spending around 10 days.. Not exact budget right now so I also have no idea how to plan the schedule…
Right now I dont have any preference in where to go, so any suggestion on where is the must-go? and estimated budget available?

What do you refer to as Northern Europe? Scandinavian countries, UK and Ireland, the Baltics, or just the northern parts of mainland europe (germany, france, etc). Norway, Sweden, Finland, and UK are all very expensive, and usually have poor weather in winter. I think mainland europe is nice to visit in winter; not too crowded, not too cold, not too expensive.
Also are you into people watching, scenery, history, arts or local history, this would help us
My friend and I am going to the mainland Europe I guess. So far no exact planning as we need to check for the flight, hostel, transportation to make sure the budget will not be really high.
We are interested in ppl watching, scenery, actually the purpose for this trip is to relax ourselves.. too tight schedule we are having everyday during work time.
For 10 days in January, relaxing getaway in northern Europe, I’d personally choose among the following:
Stockholm — get a room in Gamla Stan and enjoy cafes, museums, shopping
Bergen — a couple of days, then take Hurtigruten north
Denmark — I love Copenhagen, but honestly, it’s a lot of hustle-bustle. For a more relaxing getaway, I’d choose a holiday cottage in Jutland (northern Denmark). Many are near beaches, which of course in January will be deserted, but if you want peace and quiet and wild nature, this is a good place.
Munich, Innsbruck, Salzberg (not exactly the north) — Munich is a down-to-earth type of town, and I really like that. Take in some skiing in Austria.
I know that Finnair and SAS have begun new routes to China recently, so you might be able to get a good price connecting with one of those airlines.
If city culture is more your style, then I’d also add Berlin to the list.
Im exactly in the same boat. Don’t know which places to pick. Berlin, that’s definitely for sure. Then, nothing else is fully confirmed. I’d love to visit Poland, mainly cause of Auschwitz. Maybe i’ll receive a surprise and it’s a nice country, who knows… but that’s my only reason to go there so far….
I’m not really interested in Spain, for ex, but the plane tickets from here (Perú) are cheaper to Spain than in other point in Europe, so, it’s like, if i’m already there, why can’t i visit the country?
I need a guidebook.
