I would HIGHLY recommend picking up a guidebook at a library or bookstore and at least reading about places to see what sparks your interest. Or even looking for websites from tourist boards in those cities will have info on those places. Or even old posts in this forum.

My worry is that you’ve pick an itinerary, but at least don’t come across through your posts as having much of an idea about any place. People will make suggestions, but realize that those people’s interests might not match yours. For example I could spend 2 days in Amsterdam alone at the 3 "big" art museums, but if don’t like art, you wouldn’t want to set that time aside there.

Plus by reading, you might see some place out of the way that might interest you. You could then see if anybody has been there and has insight.

You can get by on everybody’s recommendations, but I think you’ll get more out of your trip by injecting some of your own interests and upfront research.

For me, Milan’s mildly interesting for about 3/4 day — Cathedral, LaScala and LaScala museum, Galeria (or whatever they call the enclosed shopping area). A major "tourist thing" there is DaVinci’s last supper, but it’s pretty hard to get to see that as it’s closed for an extended period in the middle of the day — it may even require advanced reservations. If I had a major time problem, I’d skip Milan to spend more time in Venice, Florence, Rome — or just about anywhere else in Italy.

I guess I’m the odd duck here in ET, but I really liked Milan. That said, a day (including an overnight) is all you need. The Duomo is stunning and the city has some nice green space, most notably around the Castello Sforzesco. The night life was wonderful, with great pizza and sidewalk cafes but without noisy Vespas racing by and without the tourist hordes so prevalent in more popular places (like Venice).

Why don’t you fly into Milan, spend your first night there, then take the train to Venice (about 3 hours) the next morning?
