Where to stop in Bavaria?
Tue, 01/27/2009 - 19:26
Hello
We will have a chance to drive around Bavaria for about three days, starting in Munich and ending in Salzburg. We would appreciate any suggestions for an itinerary that would allow us to experience the best of Bavaria. We enjoy walking around beautiful towns, admiring charming old streets and buildings, and soaking in the local culture. This is our first trip to Central Europe.
Thanks

I have enjoyed Garmisch for the reasons you mentioned.
I second that! The lakes are amazing and the zugspitz is an amzing backdrop on a clear day. Look at an early morning visit to Fussen and Neuschwanstein Castle and Oberammergau. Check out a Rick Steves guide book on Germany & Austria for great suggestions.
Neuschwanstein definitely…make sure you walk the gorge and go on the span brdige so you can get a nice pic like this.

I agree with this man… hehe
Bath, Haltwhistle, London, Füssen, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Speyer, Nördlingen, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Rome, Ostia Antica, Athens, Delphi, Athens
Thanks all! Do you think it’s too ambitious to go the entire Romanitc Road from north to south in 3-4 days if we pick up the car in Munich and end in Salzburg? If so, how many days would we need to allot to this part of our trip?
Thanks
Anne
If you’re doing the Romantic road, it’d be kinda easier to start in Frankfurt and end in Munich, then go to Salzburg.
Bath, Haltwhistle, London, Füssen, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Speyer, Nördlingen, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Salzburg, Rome, Ostia Antica, Athens, Delphi, Athens
Bamberg is a UNESCO world heritage site …beautifully preserved old town and home of smoked beer.

Mittenwald is another beautiful old Bavarian town…also if you have a chance do the drive from mittenwald to Innsbruck…one of the most breathtaking drives in europe

Paris, Pisa, Siena, Rome, Florence, Prague, Bamberg, Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Paris
Smoked beer tastes like the liquified version of smoked fish… Blaaah….
Decent town, worth a day or two, but I had heard so much great stuff over the years that my expectations were too high.. Was kind of disappointed with Bamberg.
For extra days in Bavaria I would head to the Alps…
I agree P-Man, smoked beer is definietly an acquired taste…maybe it tastes better after 5 or 6 or 10. I think Bamberg is a nice place for a day trip, but if I had a limited amount of time I’d head to the alps too.
