Where/What/When - Absolute Novice After Advice
Thu, 11/25/2010 - 08:50
Hi,
I’m an Australian school leaver and hoping to travel through a bit of Europe in 2012 (Very distant but I am still deciding a few big things before I set in a date exactly).
I am an absolute novice and have very little knowledge about what to see, when to see it etc. I have heard the Lonely Planet Europe guide books are good and I will buy a few similar books tomorrow. Any other good references?
If I could get a view personal opinions on the must see places I would appreciate it. I am hoping to backpack most of the trip with friends. We are interested in nightlife but also the more historical and cultural experiences (The lot basically. minus perhaps vineyards
). Any suggestions and brief explanation would be great.
Thanks
Totally new to all of this please be as patient as possible. Thanks.
Gonzo

How much time do you think you’ll have?
Check out our guidebook section, we tend to have varying opinions on guidebooks.
I have used LP but tend to prefer Rough Guide and Let’s Go.
Generally it is agreed that a mix of large and small cities is desirable, not too many one night stands, and one week per country if possible.
Ok thanks I’ll check them out. A friend has said getting a car on a buy back scheme is a good way of getting around, and yes I would definitely like to see a mix of cities and country areas.
Totally new to all of this please be as patient as possible. Thanks.

We almost did the buy/back scheme once, never tried it though.
