WHICH BACKPACK??
Thu, 02/03/2005 - 22:19
Hi every1, yesterday i went looking for some backpacks and i got a lot brochures and spoke to a lot of people on which one to buy… unfortunatley the people who i asked where people who worked in the shops and the best backpack was always the one they where selling…
so i am asking for your help to help me decide which is the best… i will be travelling and working for a year. money is not a problem and if you can sujest a better brand let me know…
the brands are:- MACPAC
DEUTER
FAIRYDOWN (my fav but the dearest)
PADDY PALLIN
MOUNTAIN DESIGHS (other fav)
KATHMANDU
I’ll be looking at a 65-75L pack and it also needs zip open like a luggage bag, cover for the straps is important and a detachable travel pack 10-15L.
thanx guys any info will
The only one of those brands I have any experience with is Deuter, and I wholeheartedly recommend their packs. It sounds like this pack fits with what you want (the link is off their U.S. site because it’s easier to link to). Hopefully other people here can advise you about the other brands:

Eagle Creek Transcontinental Journey is a great pack for $200 American. Opens like luggage, and has great durability. Its about 5400 cubic inches. You could live out of it for a year surely. Check it out.
thanx for the replies guys!!! Augustin25 i had a look at the backpack it looks like really good one i should have looked at deuter a lot more cause i didn’t see many, but i’ll be going back soon to buy so i’ll check it out then, where are you from August Aus or the USA?
Micahj123 thanx for the reply as well… with eagle creek i didnt see any at the shops, do you know if theres one in Aus?
Thanx for the replies keep them coming…
They actually don’t have a storefront. I have always bought mine online. Some outdoors shops will carry them. Check out www.Ebags.com or just google it. You should find some retailer in Australia that carries it, hopefully… Good Luck!
I’m in the U.S., but saw that you’re in Australia, and didn’t mention Eagle Creek because I figured their packs would be difficult to find or really expensive in Australia. I found one Australian website that has the pack Micah mentioned for $349AU:

I’m not sure what that Deuter pack would cost there, but look into both of them.
Does anybody have any suggestions for women’s packs? I’m only going for a few weeks, so I’d like something that works, but is still relatively cheap. Thanks!
Fristalee, how much are you looking to spend?
Here’s a great deal on the Eagle Creek Continental Journey (they have both the women’s and men’s on sale):

I’m also looking for advice on a backpack. I’ll be travelling for about 6 months through Europe, the Middle East, parts of Africa and Australia. During most of the time the weather will be moderate. I’m trying to decide between the Eagle Creek Transcontinental Journey (85 liters incl daypack), or the Continental Journey (69 liters incl daypack). I don’t plan on packing a sleeping bag. Will I need the extra space?
About $100-150 US I guess. Thanks a lot for that link, that sounds like a great deal! I’m VERY new to the backpacking thing, so I have no idea what to look for. Does anybody have any experience with this bag or similar bags? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks again!
I will be traveling for two months and wanted to know what backpack you recommend since i am short 5’2
if any body wants a good backpack site go to www.fairydownnz.com. probably a pack i want to buy. tell me what you think…
