My friend and I are deciding between spending more time in Bruges or Brussels. Can anyone that has been to both suggest if I can only visit one of Bruges or Brussels, which would be the better choice? and why?

There is no question, anyone will tell you to spend your time in Brugges. Brussels only needs a day (and not even a full one).

yeah brugges, although i wasnt overly fussed on it but it is better than brussels which is worth a night if you have time but not something to go out of your way for. Brussels is just another (quite small) capital city, brugges is a small ye olde kinda town, nice for a day aswell. enjoy.

I would agree with the previous two postings. However, Conde Nast Traveler just recently (June 06, I think) did an extensive article on Brussels. They were particularly impressed with the recent renovations to Brussels hotels, restaurants, clubs, etc.

I am leaving from EWR with $4000 for 9 days

As a rule of thumb, leisure-minded travel magazines do not embed subtle political messages or admonitions, disguised as promotional fluff, intended to antagonize foreign government and industry officials. That is typically reserved for more serious political, economic or legal journals or newspaper editorials. Why then, has the Conde Nast Traveler done just that, in a recent article about Brussels, Belgium?

for an interesting article on this subject matter, entitled, "Beware of the ‘Flying Dutchman’ When Traveling to Brussels", please see:
