Hello, we will be going from Krakow to Munich. We will be staying in Munich for about 4 days.

I would really love to go to Salzburg (or anywhere else in Austria that is close to Munich) for a day. Yes, I know you should have at least 2+ days in cities, but time does not permit. So a day trip will have to do. So, should we just leave really early one day and explore Salzburg and leave at night?)

OR, do we go from Krakow – salzburg (night train). Stay thre a full day then continue our journey onto Munich…

I hope my question makes sense the way I worded it. To me I am thinking a day trip from Munich makes most sense budget wise as I do not have to add another country to the eurail pass. OR, would the train there (not using a pass) be expensive?

Thanks!

I think I got it, and either option makes sense. Salzburg can be done as a day trip from Munich. Taking the overnight train from Krakow and arriving at Salzburg 9:59 (after a connection in Vienna), spending the day there and then taking an evening train to Munich also makes sense.

There are two criteria I’d use to choose: 1) how do you feel about overnight trains? They’re “ok” for me, but my husband really doesn’t like them. 2) Cost — It looks to me like you can buy a roundtrip from Munich for March 25 for 38 euros — if you buy it now on-line from http://reiseauskunft… Regular fare will be around 60 euros. Adding another country to your railpass will cost around 40 euros ($55 difference between a 5 country and 4 country 8 day adult pass).

Is there a reason for Lille? I’d take the train from London to Amsterdam (around 5 hours with a connection in Brussels) and spend another night there.

Thank you!

I just was not sure if I should get it onto my eurail pass if it was only a day. Actually, it is for 2011, so still have a year to plan (just realized I put 2010 on the planner…boo!)

And Lille, because my fiance wants to see as many war sites as possible (hence going to krakow…really want to visit Aushwitz). My main site for Amsterdam is Anne Franks House. And Berlin of course…(he is really into the history of it).

The reason for Lille, is I heard it’s where you should stop if you want to see Vimy Ridge (which he does). I was going to make it a day trip from Paris, but I figure this makes the most sense? Of all the war sites for us to see however, this would be one we could skip (whereas Aushwitz we would not skip). So yes, if it is not worth it, we will not go…Or if it’s too expensive. I think we would have to take a tour and they are quite expensive (or at least rent a car, which we do not want to do).

Thanks again!!! Smile

Oh, and we are fine with night trains. Although the last time we were in Europe was about 7 years ago. Back then we were totally fine. Although that was only a 2 week trip. I think I would prefer to take the night train to munich and at least have a relaxing day right after that long train, rather than trying to rush around seeing Salzburg.

I think you answered my question perfectly Smile

Yes, I think Eurostar to Lille and staying there makes more sense than a day trip from Paris.

I don’t know what you want to see/do in Salzburg, but a 8 hour stop there was adequate for me. Stopping there for the day will be “free” as you will already be using that day on your railpass with the trip from Krakow (an overnight train covered by the 7:00 PM rule). Taking a day trip from Munich will use another day of the pass.

Your 2 days in Berlin and Krakow aren’t really adequate for either since you want to visit Auswitz. There’s a lot of travel time involved to spend very little time there. Think about dropping Rome (which I love, but it’s really out of your way). I think you’ve got too many “long legs” and short stays in this itinerary for a two week trip.

I know…I think we really do have to drop Rome as much as I hate that idea. We can always go there NEXT trip, and focus more on Italy/Spain/Greece…

Oh decisions…!
