On a whim my boyfriend and I may take a trip to Asia within the next couple of months because of a great airfare sale from Portland, OR. At this point we have done very little research. Although we have both been to Europe over a dozen times we have never been to Asia.

We both like to party a bit but not into the wild club scene. We are both extremely interested in exploring other cultures and experiencing things we would not experience in the US. Since we just got back from a three week trip we don’t have wads of money to spend but since he doesn’t like hostelling or sharing a toilet we will be staying in private rooms. We would be going over Thanksgiving week with only 7 nights. We generally travel through one country for 2 weeks to truly get a taste of the culture. On this trip we want to settle in to one city and take day trips without having to lug everything with us. We would be open to staying in two cities MAX but prefer only one.

To better direct what cities I research I would like to know the following:

What is your favorite city in Asia and why?

Where would we find the most unusual cultural experience?

Where would our money stretch the furthest?

What city would be the best for day tripping?

Kyoto sounds amazing. What do you think of it?

I haven’t been around Asia much, but my fav city would be Beijing. There is tons of stuff to do to easily fill up an entire week including the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Tianamen Square, the Hutongs, markets, parks, hmmmm, all I can think of at the moment but definitely a lot to see and do.

You will definitely see a different culture, as well as experience different (great) foods. Your Money can stretch pretty far there as well.

But like I said, I have been to very few cities in Asia so I can’t really compare. But I had a blast in Beijing!

What is your favorite city in Asia and why?

Tokyo. Too many reasons to get into. It is the biggest, and in my opinion best city on earth. I’ve been living here for over 6 months and haven’t even scratched the service. I was visiting here so much, I finally just moved. It is ultra modern, utlra historic, it is night and day and everything in between. Every day I notice something new or amazing. I simply can’t imagine any place like it.

Where would we find the most unusual cultural experience?

Depends on what is defined as unusual or cultural. Probably every city in Asia will have one from a western perspective, but if you want unusual, Tokyo wins hands down.

One of my favourite sights is the fish market, it is one of the most Asian things I have ever seen. Like a whole other world. And a good way to end off a night on the town.

Where would our money stretch the furthest?

Not Japan, but there are ways to get by cheaper. China is cheap as chips, but costs all across Asia increase if you want to be up to western standards.

What city would be the best for day tripping?

Beijing has the Great Wall nearby. My girlfriend recently went, and she you can still see the wall for the tourists. Barely. However, Beijing is an amazing, vibrant and interesting city, one of my favourites for sure. Didn’t do any day trips as I was staying with a Korean and Chinese family.

Kyoto sounds amazing. What do you think of it?

Been to Osaka, but not Kyoto. I will go someday, I have never heard anything bad about it.

Hello to a fellow Portlander, Amy! NW Airlines has a sale to many cities. Check their site under promotions and sales. Hong Kong for $653 round trip. Sale ends today!

We are kicking around other options still.

Here comes the rain!

Cheers!
