Which Railpass to get?
Fri, 06/04/2010 - 09:44
Hello!
I’m planning to go from Paris to Berlin and from Berlin to Munich, both on night trains and then Germany to Austria during the day. What I was wondering is if the German Rail Pass will work for all these destinations? Or will I need a specific rail for France, Germany and Austria? In that case it isn’t worth it.
Some other info is that this will be towards the end of July, likely leave the night of July 21 to Berlin, then the night of July 23 to Munich and finally on the 25th to Austria. Also, it’ll be 2 Youths traveling.
Thanks for your help!
Justin

A German railpass only covers trains in Germany it will not cover the portions of these routes that are in France and Austria. But is buying a pass for just these three tickets worth it?
Check the German national rail company website for pricing. http://reiseauskunft… If you can find and buy on-line special fares for your dates, it will probably be cheaper than any railpass — although you’ll have to buy them soon, as the special fares often sell out well in advance. Check the French and Austrian national rail company websites (links are in a sticky at the top of this forum or under “transportation” on the “travel tips” tab) too, as there may be other specials available there.
If you decide on a railpass, you will want to cover both Germany and France as the French portion of the Paris-Berlin run will be fairly expensive. I don’t think the ticket from Munich to Vienna will be as expensive, so adding Austria to cover that may not be worth the extra cost — check on the German rail link.
Thank you very much for your help! I’ve spent a few days scratching my head over this and comparing prices.
