whos been?
Thu, 01/04/2007 - 06:02
So there was nothing in here! So i thoug i would ask people, who has been there, and how much fun ddi you have, at Oktoberfest?
I went in 05! I loved every minute of it! I even had my very first, whole, beer there!
Id like to go next year, but someboy in here told me it was expensive, and i don’t drink so i on’t know if it’s worth….
see i found it cheaper than the rest of the cities i was in, well the hostles go up in price during those two weeks! but food is cheap, and you dont have to drink to have a great time! Its a big party! and there are rides, like a fair would have, lol. If you are in Europe during late sept, early oct, you should make your way there! It was my fav. part of my trip, and i was there for 6 months! I went all over Italy, France and Germany, and a little of the UK. But munich was my fav. city!
I went in 2003. It’s certainly worth going to if you’re in the area at that time. Personally, I’m not a big beer drinker and it is very crowded, so after about 3 hours I had enough.
when i was there, i stayed at the euro youth hostel, which i loved, and it was like 20 a night, maybe 30. but i think 20!
im not big on beer either, but like they say when in Rome, so i guess when in Munich, you have to have a beer and pretzle. Italy a bowl of pasta and a pizza, there are just thing you should do when somewhere new!
How much the hostals can cost?
And i might be there in October, so it might be worth ….
This year will be my 12th Oktoberfest. I am booked for Munchen – 9/23 thru 9/27/07..
Prost!
MunichBeerBoy
It’s “Prost” or “ProBt”? It’s the same i guess, right?
If it’s your 12th, it must be all fun i suppose……
It’s definitly on my list of places i’d love to see someday. I’ve been to Munich in ’05, and loved it, but I find September to be a bad month for me to travel. Maybe someday.
I am going to try and make it again this year….had alot of fun last year which was my 4th.
Everything is booked and setup. I will be flying US Air for free this year (award ticket), and staying clos to the fest grounds. See you all there.
Watch the movie “BEERFEST” (funny!) for some motivation!!!
SUNSKIN
P.S. – Chris, you in this year?
MunichBeerBoy
omg i love beer fest, when they have to drink the giant shoe,
if any of your guys end up with the shoe remember!!
Tip it at the end[]
Come on guys & girls!!! We need to pickup the chatter a bit here, as Oktoberfest is a mere 9 & 1/2 months away!
MunichBeerBoy
I have been to Oktoberfest and dream of going back. Until then, though, I will hit Oktoberfest in La Crosse, WI, and have a jolly good time. Believe it or not, it is a pretty great time in down there.
Happy Trails!
Rick
I was there last year and am planning on going again this year. It’s the biggest party in the world.
Flight: Right on! What dates will you be there??
MunichBeerBoy
can you get cold beer?
Contrary to some beliefs, the bier in Munchen (especially at the fest) is indeed served chilled.
MunichBeerBoy
C’mon beer drinkers,,, let’s pickup the chatter here! February is half-over, so the countdown will soon start… At this very moment, I am enjoying an 11% ABV – Special Edition Belgian Abbey Ale. It’s called St. Benardus. Perhaps a bit over-priced ($10), but a darn nice bier!
MunichBeerBoy
so start the countdown thread sun. I would start it myself but, it seems our resident veteran should lead things off. My buddy and i have already started the countdown here at work. I cant wait!
You got it!
217 days, 22 hours, 4 mins…
MunichBeerBoy
213 days, 23 hours, 50 mins.
MunichBeerBoy
Btw, watched beerfest this weekend and it got me all excited about the upcoming fest. I recommend that movie to anyway whos attending. It was actually funnier than i thought it was going to be. I have a feeling it will be here before we know it.
it’s great to see the chatter beginning….. i convinced my friend who has never been to oktoberfest, but has been to munich with me when we backpacked through europe after graduation, to come….. we’re all booked, and couldn’t be more excited to make my 3rd consecutive wiesn… i was at epcot in disney world this past weekend, and had dinner and a few masses of franzikaner weisse and sang along to a few round of ein prosit at germany, and that just whet my whistle and got me even more giddy… i know it’s 7 months away, but like the previous posters have noted, THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN!!!!!!!!!
btw, where did the discussion boards on www.oktoberfest.de go?
matty….i assume your coming from the US. How much did the flight cost ya and where are you flying from? What dates are you going to be in attendance? Best i can find is $568 from JFk——>MUC from 9/27-10/4. I still havent booked my flight but assume i should. I doubt the price will go down.
I am from the us, and assuming not far from you….. i will be attending from tuesday 9/25 returning home sunday 9/30…. i’m flying in and out of newark (EWR)….. My flight connects in frankfurt, then to munchen (and the reverse on the return) on lufthansa….. i would chose not to connect in paris (i have twice, and a nightmare both times), and prefer german efficency, haha, so hence frankfurt…. no long lay overs either…… if i’m remembering correctly, the flight was $602 per person (it was booked the beginning of last week)…… i hope this helps……. you should definitely book ASAP, and if you haven’t booked a hotel/hostel yet, do that immidiately if you want to be centrally located (theresienwiese, hauptbahnhof since you have to take a 40 minute train from the airport to the city, marienplatz, etc), and i mean this week immidiately as it is already slim pickings..
ok, so then i assume the $568 is a pretty good price. Thats a direct flight into MUC. Yea im from long island. We already have reservations for the hotel. We are a mere 3 min walk to the fest! Maybe ill see u there.
i would definitely jump on it then!!!! that is a good price direct……. good thing you have the hotel already booked…… have you been before, how many of you going, how old are you?
never been there before….there is 3 of us (all guys) and we are all 26. My goal is to learn some basic german between then and now.
nice….. well i don’t have to tell you as i’m sure you’ve heard and read, you are going to have the time of your life, and going to want to return year after year after year, you’ll see…….. i’m 26 also, and went with a group of 3 last year and it was a perfect number (tyring to find tables, etc)….this year it’s just me and my one friend….. i speak german pretty well, and can tell you it really does go a long way… if you can pick up some basic things it will certianly help.. if i can give you one to start, it would be:
“ist dieser platz noch frei?”
translated, not literally, means are these open seats at your table available for us to sit in……. most likely, since you’re 3 guys, if you ask a group of guys the answer will be “nein’, but if you ask in german, you will have a better chance (a whole respect thing)… so moral of the story, look for a group of chicks and ask them
Matty: Let us make sure that we do not miss one another this time around!
Gd: I have watched Beerfest at least 15 times! Along with the “40 Year Old Virgin” – this is the funniest movie to come out in years. I too was pleasantly surprised at how well-done it was. The movie is 2 hrs long, but funny all the way thru, and actually has an interesting plot – with the bier recipe, etc. Loved it!!!
In fact; I am taking a three-day weekend, and plan on getting pissed – while watching BEERFEST agin this Friday…
Guys: I am staying at the LeMeridien Hotel – directly across from the Hauptbahnhof, and only 10 or 15 mins walk to the Fest grounds this year. I will be easy to find!
Yes, I would say that $568 is a good price. From JAX to PHl to MUC is $561 + taxes & fees, but I am using Award Miles.
MunichBeerBoy
There are so many funny parts in Beerfest… If you have not seen it, the movie will grab you at the opening scene. They are playing quarter-bounce in the basement of a church, and you do not realize right away that the…. well, let’s just say it’s pretty friggin funny! The priest actually has Cronies…and gambles quite a few bucks away playing quarters!
I will watch the darn thing another 25 times before September 22d, then bring it on the plane with me! Also, the hotel I am staying happens to be the only one in Munchen with 42” Flat Screen TV’s and DVD players in the rooms… So, I guess that means I will be watching the movie each morning (9/23 thru 9/27) – to get pumped-up!!!
MunichBeerBoy
Matty: Small world! My brother is flying-in from Michigan this Friday, and we will be at Seaworld all day Saturday, then Epcot (Germany) on Sun.
MunichBeerBoy
it is a small world……after all….. i went on that too, hahaha…… if you go to biergarten in germany, see if you can get a waiter named TINO (he was from outside of berlin), nice kid, spoke great english, and brought our biers quickly…. if you see him, please do me a favor and tell him i said hello (i was the one who spoke german with him last saturday night and was with the strawberry blonde haired girl)…. he’ll probably remember, he got a nice tip, ;0)…..
Bierfest was leaps and bounds better than i thought it would ever be, which was relatively foolsih considering how much i loved super troopers….. i love the opening scence, and the scene when they first go to duetschland, and get to theresienwiese and you get to see real footgae of the fest…. i got all giddy like a school girl when i saw that… i don’t even want to start commenting on the 40-year old virgin, b/c i could simply go on for hours, great flick….
i’m staying at the inter-city hotel munchen (basically attatched to the train station)…. this will be my second stint in this hotel, it’s very nice and location could not be better (a very nice breakfast is included every morning, and if i can give Gdrinkh2o some further advice, it’d be this mate; eat breakfast everyday either before you go to the wiesn (if it is included in your hotel, a european breakfast really is the perfect thing to have in the morning, it will build a nice base for all the booze, and won’t leave you feeling all heavy and greasy in the stomach like a bacon, egg and cheese biscut will) and if you really want to eat at a tent, i would suggest the weisswurst @ augustiner festzelt (big tent, and the most delicious bier at the fest, some people will try, but not even sure how it’s debatable) …. sunskin, i know exactly where you’re staying…. as the numbers on the countdown get smaller and smaller, we’ll try to see if we can work somehting out to have a mass or 4 together… do you have any reservations anywhere during your stay?
Gdrinkh2o, lesson #2: (we’ll start easy)
“Wie Heisst du?”…… What is your name…. (W’s are pronounced like V’s in German)
212 Days 20 Hours 3 Minutes…
Matty, per Sun i booked a hotel with a good breakfast. I will certainly be taking advantage of that every morning. Im staying at the Jedermann. Btw, ty for the daily german lessons. I will certainly be putting them to good use.
no worries…. glad to help a fellow fester out!!! as we get closer to the kick-off, i’ll give you the lyrics to a couple essential songs you must and will want to know
Matty: Gd is in the perfect location, and has a much shorter walk to the Fest than even myself. The Jedermann has a wonderful breakfast, as I have stayed there many times. Gdrink: Mention my name (Michael Kaiser) as a referring former customer. The famile Jenke will remember me for sure. And be sure to load-up on the good, fresh breads & jams in the a.m. too.
I am certain that I will be speaking Deutsch the entire time I am at “Germany” in Epcot, but I will mention you, and ask for Tony, etc. I will see if he remembers you! Ich sprechen zie Deutsch – so meine frau & famile haben zie – NO FRIGGIN IDEA WHEN I AM TALKING BOUT THEM!!!
Matty: No reservations yet, but I will likely be a guest at a 20-person(all locals) reserved table Monday or Tues. nite.. Meine Gut Fruend (Herr Firnkes) may also have an extra seat fur die.
I only had one problem with the scene in “Beerfest” when the brothers arrived im Munchen. The one part – of the crowd at the fest, and the night shots of the City Center were authentic. However, the Zelten shots were obviously shot in Hollywood. They have not had actual tents in over 80 yrs. The bier zelten are all aluminum, wood, glass & some steel… No cloth tents!
I will post my travel cell number on Friday, 21.9.07, so you can find me without much effort.
PROST!
Beefest Herr Referee: “Uuunnndddd,,, trinken!”
Another quick lesson:
MunichBeerBoy
sounds great Sun….. can we have an up-to-date countdown snapshot if you’d be so kind?
LESSON # 3:
“Was machst du nach die feste”
translated
“what are you doing after the fest?”….. this can be used in many situations, think of the numerous possibilities[]
Certainly….
Der Countdown zum 174. Oktoberfest: 211 Tage, 19 Stunden und 9 Minuten
MunichBeerBoy
Danke schoen…. sher gut!!!!
Im definately going to need to get a cd or somthing so i can get some audio for these german lessons. The pronunciation is far different from the typical italian, french, spanish. Granted im no linguist in those either. Figure i can use my time communting in the mornings wisely.
I will certainly thrown ur name out at the hotel Sun….thanks.
Gd: Try looking at the local book “Superstore” like Barnes & Noble or even Walmart or Amazon.com (online)… You could likely find a Basic German book – which will also come mit a CD..
MunichBeerBoy
ja sun, du hast rechts….. G wird ein buch finden mit einen CD….. es wird helfreich sein…… countdown please sun?
lesson 4:
“Ich kann nur ein bisschen Deutsch sprechen’
translated
“i can only speak a little German”
nice work matty, this forum is going to come in handy.
Sun, i think im going to have to make a trip to the store this weekend.
btw, 210 days 14 hours 47 mins……
Ja. Ser gut meine frunde.
Here is an easy, but handy one: Bitte, Wo ist der Bahnhof?
(Where is the train station please)

Just booked my flight. Since i waited too long i have to deal with a layover in dusseldorf. But, it only cost me $579 total. Not too bad considering i waited. Ill be there 9/28-10/4!
That is still a good price. Dusseldorf? Are you flying on LTU? Lufthansa?
MunichBeerBoy
Flying on LTU.
