Wifebeater/tank tops for guys?
Wed, 05/02/2007 - 18:49
Assuming they are comfortable to wear and are also cooler (temperature-wise) than a t-shirt, what’s the deal with “wifebeaters” for guys backpacking? My personal opinion is on this side of the pond they are not exactly classy, but being from Florida, I can see why sometimes guys wear them around town. Will this scream “American” in Spain, France, and Italy (mainly larger cities), and/or look out of place? Forgive me for my cluelessness, but is it de rigueur to simply go without a shirt (while outdoors)? Probably not as much in Paris, but in say southern Italy towards the end of June?
I just don’t want to even bring them along if its going to make me stick out like a sore thumb (more than I already will).
Thanks.
whatever, im gonna bring a couple. they take practically no space and are really comfortable.
Yes, but there will be many times when you look less than classy anyway.
…which is why i am not exclusively bringing wifebeaters.
Yeah, but you will be surrounded by other tourists, so what diff does it make.
If you really care about not looking like a tourist I wouldn’t
bring them. A better option would be a quick drying tee-shirt in a
dark color. Performance style tees take up little room because they
are made of synthetic fabrics and also wick away moisture to help keep
you cool and they dry quickly when you wash them.
REI has a great selection of these, here’s a good one for $20

Unless you are on the beach, most people stay fully clothed.
can’t show off my tattoo of uncle sam beating up the french if i’ve got sleeves covering it, ya know?
