Imagine a bay, a perfect semicircle of white sand, greeny blue sea with waves breaking all along the shore, backed by low greenery and bordered at both ends by tall rocky red mountains, underneath a cloudless sky with warm sun heating the cool calm dry air. Impossible, you say? Well that’s because you live in northern Europe or the north of North America. This is Wineglass Bay on the east coast of Tasmania in winter. It really is one of the finest spots in the world.
If an Australian tells you not to go to Australia in winter because it’s cold, ignore them. The weather is perfect for everything except swimming. If this is winter, who needs summer?
Tasmania needs at least 3-4 weeks to appreciate thoroughly. This was agreed by the people we met — a Dutchman hitch-hiking taking several monts, another Dutchman renting a car, and a Canadian girl with her bike and trailer brought by air from Canada. The bus tours are probably good but too quick.
