Work and travel - France or UK???
Thu, 11/20/2008 - 11:24
Hi,
Im planning to work and travel from late december 2008 to june 2009 (maximum).
I cant decide between France and UK+Ireland
From your experience, which Trip would you recommend (considering the time of year, amount of money I have to spend etc.), where would it be more likely to get a job (very simple work and travel jobs), which country(ies) is more appropriate for work and travel/backpacking in general?
I understand english quite well, but I would want to improve my speaking.
My french isnt so good in general – how possible is it for me to get a job then?
I could really use french for my studies, which start in autumn 2009, but really good english is quite essential.
I hope you can help me! thank you for your time!
The job market is said to be much tougher in France than in Britain and Ireland, although Ireland’s “Celtic Tiger” days are over, and Britain is now officially in recession. Like any developed country, Britain, Ireland, and France give priority to foreigners (or non-EU nationals) who have a high-demand skill that they can’t get from domestic workers. Non-EU nationals without in-demand skills will find it tougher. That said, there are work-study programs or temporary work programs for young people if you dig deep enough. A lot of these jobs are geared towards college students or recent grads, and involve working in tourism-related services (like at hostels or ski resorts).
Where are you coming from, and what language(s) do you speak?

Im from germany, and of course I speak german. I can understand english quite well, my speaking is also good but could be better. My french is much worse but it would be a chance to improve that…
thanks for your answer
Hi,
my name is Giulia from Italy and few months ago I was in the your same situation.
I chose London, and I’m quite happy abount this decision.
I moved here in june after my graduation, I attented an english course for 3 month and now I found a work-experience in my field (advertising).
I advice you Uk althought it very expensive and the weather is crap.
Let me know which country will you choose.

Hi!
Ive decided to do the Uk+ireland trip, basically because my english is much better than my french.
What route should i take? first ireland than scotland and than england? any suggestions? could you state some must see places/cities.
@ giulia
how much is your rent and how big is your room? when did you start looking for it and where? and where did you find your job?
thank you=)
My room is a double room with a double bed in a really nice and safe area (fulham brodway)
I pay 660 pound per month including bills, but in my opinion you could find something better and cheper. To find it I spent one week, every day I saw two or tree house in differente areas.
My favorite website to look for a flatshare and flatmate is gumtree (it is very good also to find a job!). For my workexperience the univeversity of art of London helped me.
Good luck!! If you have any other question, just ask me.
And let us know.
