Hello there
I was hoping I could get some advice on working abroad. I want to go to Australia next year for 6months-1year, and I am an American Citizen. All that I am finding is the work visa’s for Australia are for certain countries and US is not one of them. Is there a site or place to call to get more information?
Also where does one look for short term jobs there? I traveled around Europe for a year and found random jobs all over that helped support my habit, but since they were all in different countries I didn’t bother with the visa.
Thank you for your help in advance! Smile
Happy Travels!
Melanie

Hi Melanie,
Check out www.bunac.org. They are affiliated with www.iep.co.nz over this side of the world. They can help you get a 4 month work visa to Australia. Not sure of any other options for Americans (bummer, I know). I am now on one of their programs to New Zealand which we are able to go on for a year. This program is special because it allows americans to work for one employer for the duration of the permit;if you go another route you are supposed to change employers every 3 months. Any questions about the program or bunac or iep i would be happy to answer. good luck!

Hello,

I am in the process of chosing a program for work abroad in Australia. I checked out Bunac, inter-exchange, cultural embrace, and some others. It seems they all run around the same price and offer the same things, however, I am going with Bunac due to my readings of many reviews and comparing the literature the organizations have sent me.

For some reason, US citizens can only work for 3 months and travel for 1 month (4 months in Australia total). However, US citizens can work for 12 months in New Zealand.

The costs of the Bunac program is 595.00 dollars for the application fee. Then, once youa re accepted you HAVE TO purchase insurance which runs areound 200 dollars. I am just about to mail out my application, so as I go through the process, i will update you.

Unfortunatley, there is NO cheaper way of doing this, I already checked. AS US citizens we have to be sponsored by one of the above agencies (or some other), plus, you HAVE TO BE under 30 years old.

Happy travels

Thanks so much- please keep me posted on your findings… guess I might just have to do 4 mo in Australia and then some time in NZ… which does sound fun as well… I just want to see another part of the world and know that I don’t want to just go for a few weeks.
Thanks again! and if anyone else has any suggestions I am all ears!
Melanie

Melanie,

Through BUNAC, they offer a combo package where you can do BOTH Australia and NZ.

Have you checked out their website? http://www.bunac.org

When next year do you plan on going?

I am hoping to go at the end of January, staying until late April/early May.

I know it is supposed to take about 8 weeks for the process to be complete as far as paper work and such.

Plus, airfare, that is a completely different story…

If you want to, you can email me:

Take care and happy travels

First off…did you just get jobs under the table while you travelled around Europe?? I was considering doing this when I was travelling so I could stay longer, but wasn’t sure with the visa situation and everything. I also checked out the Bunac program to work in Australia, as I have an Australian boyfriend and this seems to be the only way an American can work over there. sarahfromboston..any info on the program would be great!! I wonder if the US will ever have a working holiday scheme with any countries in the future?…

Melanie,

Just to update you, I just applied to BUNAC. Hopefully, I should be hearing from them soon regarding step two of the process to work.

I will keep this forum posted…
