My sister and I are kiwis living in Australia. The travel bug itches again and we are cotemplating the US. New york or san fran perhaps. How easy is it to work without a visa? if we do apply for a green card and are declined.. is that something that would show on our passport record? applying through an au-pair type scheme allows a very limited salary (US $140 P.W).
any help hugely appreciated
thanks

In the US, Without a green card, you need a H1 visa to work temporarily, or get a B1 visa for a max of 3 months but have to be sponsered by a company.

In GB, if you are a commonwealth citizen, you are allowed to work for 2 years without needed a permit.

Most of the guys renting my flats in London are actually Australian and they work with no permissions whatsoever.

How do you plan to come to the US ? Getting a au-pair job in NY/NJ is easy.

I am leaving from US and traveling for 11 days
London, Brussels, Basel, Paris, London

Thanks heaps for the info.
Maybe nannying/au-pairing is the best way.
Do you think it would be easy/safe to get a job in new york without going through the agencies here? (thus seeking a higher paying job) or should i just go by the books and go through the process and earn minimal amount for a year???
