Would you suggest traveling from Rome to a) Florence or to b) Naples?
Sun, 06/06/2010 - 23:20
Hello!
I am planning a trip to Italy in a few weeks and have 2 days unaccounted for in my itinerary. I am spending 4 nights in Rome (June 23-27), then I have 2 free nights (June 27-29) before spending 1 more (June 29) in Pescara and flying back to Toronto on the 30th.
I am very interested in seeing Florence, Naples and the Amalfi Coast but I know I don’t have the time. So I am wondering what is the best or maybe easiest trip from Rome and then to Pescara via:
a) Florence, Pisa
b) Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento, Positano (maybe not all, just a few stops)
I know I only have 2 days, and I am just looking for suggestions. Any help would be so appreciated!
Thanks muchly!
I am leaving from Toronto, ON ~ Canada with $4500 for 17 days

Well, I’d prefer Florence for two full days (though you could take a 1/2 day trip to Pisa but Florence is a very full 2 days). The Amalfi Coast would also be spectacular, but I think you’d want more than 2 days just because it does take some time to get around. Pompeii is an entire day, so that leaves just one day for the coast…though you could always just pick 1 town to visit and explore there for a day. If you chose the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is probably your best bet for lodging as it’s central and has good transportation connections.
Either way, skip Naples. It’s fine but other places are much more worthwhile.
Madrid, Barcelona, Athens, Santorini, Rome, Sorrento, Florence, Cinque Terre, Nice, Lyon, Paris, Zagreb, Grabovac (Plitvice), Split, Dubrovnik, London
If you have 4 full days in Rome, then use one for a day trip. You can fit definitely visit Pompeii and Herculaneum or Sorrento and maybe snag a pizza (the only reason I can think of to visit Naples) near the train station on your way back.
Spend your extra days in Florence.
I found Florence much more interesting than Naples.
Perhaps from Nice you could go to Florence, then to Rome and Pescara. I think that might save you some time.
Florence itself can fill more than two days, but if you want, Pisa is an easy half-day trip from there.
I think a day trip from Rome to Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii, and Sorrento is overambitious and would not give you time to stop and enjoy anything, although the local train from Naples to Herculaneum, Pompeii, and Sorrento is handy.
I’m curious how you are getting home from Pescara? It doesn’t seem to be convenient to any international airport.
Madrid, Toledo
Dublin, Dingle, Dublin
Bruges, Ardennes, Bastogne, Brussels
London
Charleville-Mézières, Reims
Thanks for the help guys!
I think we will spend the 2 days in Florence, and most likely leave the Amalfi Coast for another trip since we only have 3 full days in Rome.
We then head to Pescara where we have a direct flight from the Pescara airport back home to Toronto. A few international flights do leave from that airport (PSR), and it was a really cheap ticket that we couldn’t pass up. My boyfriend and I are very easy going and haven’t been to Europe before, so we are up for anything and we are looking forward to exploring the little beach town.
Again, I really appreciate your help for my first time planning a trip abroad. Thanks so much!!
