Train is the cheapest and best way to get around Italy. Just point to point tickets, no railpass will probably be best. Train is also the best way to get around Germany (except for maybe a Rhine cruise of the “Romantic Road”) but it can be fairly expensive — unless you find some of the specials and deals or use a railpass. Check for schedules (anywhere in Europe) and pricing (in Germany or for routes that start or end in Germany) at http://reiseauskunft…

Look for a cheap flight between Italy and Germany and from Germany back to Malta (or Sicily). Use www.whichbudget.com to see which budget airlines fly which routes.

Be sure to find out what’s open and what’s running on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Europe pretty much shuts down (all transit, restaurants, shops and attractions plus many hotels, etc.) on Christmas day. Also check the ferry schedules. Don’t assume 2 or 3 ferries a day in winter because that’s what’s available in summer — there may only be 1 or 2 ferries a week.
