The little capital in the ‘Valley of the Gods’.
At almost 4000 m – higher than the top of the Mont Blanc – people are actually living here in a moonscape landscape, defined as a ‘cold desert’, only open for the outside world from Mid-June to End-September (if the gods are benign). A 1000-year old perfectly conserved open air museum of living Tibetan history.
For some the incredible, often surreal landscapes are the main attraction, for others it’s the great Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, for again others it’s the snow leopard, blue sheep, Tibetan wolf or yak herds.
However, most (of the small number) of visitors never get in touch with the real treasure: a poor but happy people, rich in traditions and handicraft skills, fighting the extreme winter cold with an equally extreme warmth-of-heart. And they all have ‘big’ hearts (even physically, because of the demanding altitude).
If you’ve seen it all ….. then this should be your next destination!
