this is my first time going to Europe traveling with 2 friends. Would love any suggestions….
In Spain, I would try to take a few days off of MAdrid and make my way down to Granada. 10 days total in Spain is a lot and it gives you the chance to see a bit more of the country.
Cut a few days from Milan and stop in Florence on the way down to Rome. Florence has much more to offer than the mostly commercial city of Milan.
Budget is good
My first suggestion would be to NOT fly into Frankfurt. Except for Frankfurt all your destinations are in Spain and Italy. I would get an open jaw ticket (arrive one city depart another) to Lisbon and depart Rome (Or Rome to Lisbon). Open Jaw tickets are a little more expensive, but when you factor in time and money wasted taveling from Frankfurt to Lisbon and Rome to Frankfurt it would be money well spent.
I also think you could trim down time spent in some cities and add a few others.
Milan is not worth 5 days. It is the fashion capital of europe, but as a tourist you will not be privvy to that glamourous world. Also, it is still one of the most polluted cities in Europe and is a bit snooty. I personally would skip it, but if you really want to go 1 day max. would be sufficient to see the Galleria, painting of the Last Supper, etc.. With the extra days I would add Florence with side trips to Pisa (1 day) and Siena (1 day) or add in Venice
Lisbon is a beautiful city, but you could easily cut it to 2 or three days and take a side trip north to Sintra and spend some time in the southern beach towns of Faro or Lagos (great beaches, lots of young people, nice nightlife)
Instead of 5 days in Madrid and 5 in Barcelona I’d would cut both down to 3 days. With the extra 4 days I would add Seville (home of Flamenco) and Granada (home of the Alhambra Palace…a world heritage site and one of the finest moorish castles in Spain) and maybe even include a day trip to Segovia (from Madrid)
Thank you for your suggestions. Nothing is really set in stone except for my flight to and from Frankfurt. I’m meeting my friends there and it turned out to be way cheaper then doing a multi-city ticket.
It’s a bit like flying into New york to do a trip to Los Angeles. I woulda told my friends I’ll see you suckers in Lisbon and saved myself a long boring train trip
